Can a hero ever lay down his weapons?
A gripping tale of a warrior’s search for second sight

“Primal theatre from the heart of Bulgarian myth and folklore... A fabulous blend of storytelling, ritual and music combined with divine Bulgarian singing”

In the shadowy world where truth lies, can the hero Doichin ever lay down his weapons? Is there anyone that he can trust?

The Dark-Eyed Warrior
is a gripping tale about a warrior who finds a bride but loses his heart, a shining story about seeing and seeming, about betrayal, revenge and tricks of the light, fire and passion and second sight. A bearskin coat rides out from the forest, a hunter goes wild, and a blind man sees through a wolf’s eyes.

Beautifully interweaving storytelling with ritual, evocative music and stunning vocals, this dark Bulgarian epic is a bittersweet gift from the visionary heart of Bulgarian myth and folklore. It lures you into a passionate primal world that offers a mirror for the modern age.

Background Notes

The Dark-Eyed Warrior is the company’s third main Bulgarian production.  It is based on our translations of authentic Bulgarian heroic epics, folk ballads, ritual songs, legends and traditional tales that have been handed down orally from generation to generation in Bulgarian villages.

Most of the texts for The Dark-Eyed Warrior are drawn from the fragmented epic cycle about the hero, Doichin. He was probably a real historical figure living around the 14th century AD, who has since been overlaid with a much earlier mythology, going back to Proto-Bulgarian, Slavic and Thracian roots.

We acknowledge our debt to those who told these stories, and to the Bulgarian folklorists who collected and recorded their songs and narratives as a gift to the future.

This wonderful material has ancient origins and is largely unknown outside Bulgaria. A Spell In Time' s work in translating and performing it is unique. The company aims to bring to English-speaking audiences for the first time a distillation of traditional Bulgarian culture that is exciting, enjoyable and entertaining while offering an alternative insight into shared human experience.
